Question by : Computer repair business idea.?
I’m a 16 year old college student with no personal income, I have tried to get a part time job but I’ve found it impossible after submitting an applications to a number of different places.
Over the past few years I have been asked by a number of different people for advice or help fix their personal computers. I have been quite successful, with most of the problems I have been presented with (all software issues).
For example today (it game me the idea) a friend had a unbootable Dell laptop. I rescued the files using a Linux boot disk, then formatted and re-installed the OS (+ drivers). Now the laptop is working perfectly.
My friend suggested I put an advert in the local paper (not charging much) for (software only) computer repair/ basic consultancy.
I can rescue data from unbootable computers, format/install/ fix OSs, repair most application software issues I am presented with, install and update drivers, setup wireless networks, setup PC and portable devices, tune change settings to improve machine performance etc… I could also act as a consultant, if someone gave me their budget and explained what they wanted from a computer I could advise them what they should buy, from an informed position.
I’m considering putting an advert in the local paper and in 2 shop windows. I wouldn’t charge much, maybe £5 an hour for repair work and if I can’t fix it to the owners required standard I wouldn’t charge anything.
This is just an idea, I’m looking for people’s opinions of the idea and if you believe there is anything I need to consider if I choose to do this.
Much appreciated.

It’s not a bad idea. One possible problem-can you drive? You may get some customers bring their PC/laptop to you but it is not a good idea if you can’t get there. Secondly £5 an hour is too little. The adverts are quite expensive and you will not recoup costs at £5 an hour. I would say work towards an average of £40 a job (If anything takes longer than 2 hours you probably doing something wrong). I think you must do no fix no fee. Also remote fixing? I suppose you have got to do more than just fixing PCs but sounds like you can. Go for it!

Question by : Where do I stand legally with a small charity business?
I am wanting to start my own small business making dog biscuits and selling them then giving the profits to a dog rescue (with proof), but if a dog got sick (nothing to do with the biscuits) could they blame it on my biscuits and possibly sue?
If that’s the case how would I go about proving it wasn’t my biscuits?
I really want to do a good cause but I don’t want to get myself in a financial mess because of it.
Crikey, looks like I had better leave it for now :/
Thanks though.

You can’t. You will need to have in place full quality control procedures and laboratory evidence for the QC. All your ingredients will need to be tracked and be traceable to known sources. You will need to have a licensed kitchen and equipment for making the stuff.
You should re-think your business model.
What do you think? Answer below!
Question by Uggle: What is the easiest (and cheapest) way to register yourself as a small business?
I do a lot of feral cat rescue, and have thought for a while that registering as a business might be a good idea so that:
-can use places like Makro to buy cheap cat food (main reason, as spend a small fortune on pet food!)
-On the rare occassion that a company offers a donation to cover costs, I can have a seperate business account to give details so I can prove that the money has gone on vet bills/food/crates etc
What’s the easiest/cheapest way to do this? Can’t take the charity route cos need appointed board and other people, but it’s just me.
Any help greatly appreciated!
Sorry – am in the UK (England)
